[24] A Tale of Two Workplace Cultures

June 9, 2018June 9, 20181 Comment

It’s been a bit quieter on the Big Little Lives front, right? Well, maybe on the surface (sorry, everyone) but I can assure you it’s been anything but: Make like a duck. Calm on the surface, legs paddling like nuts underneath. I know I’m only four weeks into work life in the US, but wow... … Continue reading [24] A Tale of Two Workplace Cultures

[23] A Day in the (Silicon Valley) Life

May 22, 2018May 22, 20185 Comments

Dated houses, urban sprawl, billion-dollar start-ups and the highest net worth individuals in the world. Where am I? Yep, you got it. Come taste a slice of the Silicon Valley pie. *** It’s here. It’s morning. I wedge open my eyes. Next thing I know, my purpose-bred alarm clock clambers up onto my second gen … Continue reading [23] A Day in the (Silicon Valley) Life

[22] Mum-umental Shifts

May 9, 2018May 9, 20184 Comments

Life, hey? So much has happened in such a small space of time. A couple of weeks ago, I was interviewing. This week? I’m working.   Yep, you read correctly. I got the job! I’ve just joined one of Silicon Valley’s largest tech firms and I’m practically scaling the walls with glee! Of course, acceptance of … Continue reading [22] Mum-umental Shifts

[21] Interviewing in Silicon Valley

April 28, 20181 Comment

As you may recall, I’ve been struggling with the whole stay-at-home vs. working thing. Having flown solo since Cam started work in December, I am now the walking dead. Regardless, faced with the choice between work and being a stay-at-home parent of three not-yet-school-aged kids, I’ve decided that my sanity – as well as our … Continue reading [21] Interviewing in Silicon Valley

[13] Land of Extremes

February 3, 2018January 16, 20192 Comments

As a tribute to the little things I am enjoying about living in the United States, last week’s post got me thinking. The last two months have signified an extreme up-and-down journey for my family and me. And, like I recounted, America seems to be a land of extremes. Can I start with the elephant … Continue reading [13] Land of Extremes

[11] My Head’s Spinning

January 16, 2018February 5, 201811 Comments

There are big brownie points up for grabs here, everyone: do you remember the verse one opening line of All Saints’ seminal 1997 hit, Never Ever? ...No? Come on! You’re missing out. It’s poetic and supremely relevant stuff: My head’s spinning Boy, I’m in a daze I feel isolated Don’t want to communicate Too right … Continue reading [11] My Head’s Spinning

[10] I Feel the Earth Move

January 11, 2018February 5, 2018Leave a comment

At exactly 2:39am last Thursday morning, I was jolted awake by a very big, very unfamiliar sound. I’d had a few wines at dinner, so perhaps that’s why it took me a few moments to fully register that someone was breaking in to our house. Or at least that’s what I thought it was. Two … Continue reading [10] I Feel the Earth Move

[8] Santa Baby

December 23, 2017February 5, 20181 Comment

Given it’s almost December 25th, I’m going to admit it: a Northern Hemisphere Christmas is just, well, better. I love everything about this time of year. I lap up Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas and unbox my stash of Christmas cheer as soon as December 1st rolls around. This devoted Christmas junkie absolutely lives for it. … Continue reading [8] Santa Baby

[GUEST POST] Cam: N00b

December 21, 2017February 5, 201810 Comments

News just in: Cam’s passed day one at his new job. Excited, conflicted, and all N00b’d up, he decided to drop by and tell us a little about his first impressions... *** I was glad I didn't wear a tie. That morning, the morning of my first day, I put one on and looked in … Continue reading [GUEST POST] Cam: N00b

[7] Flying Solo

December 10, 2017February 5, 201814 Comments

Well, I’m still here. I’m still standing. Kind of. I’ve survived my first week flying solo with the kids. You may shake your head and think ‘big deal, millions of people around the world look after their own kids. And PS: some do it full-time, without a partner’. That’s true, of course, and my hat … Continue reading [7] Flying Solo

Zoe’s is the second in a series of four interviews - A Shared American Dream - that I’ll publish on Big Little Lives over the coming month. In each blog, I’ll explore a single, central, cutting question: Is life in the US all it’s shaped up to be? There’s something super magical about meeting a new and wonderful friend overseas. Especially when that person has a scarily similar history to you, and especially when that person experiences the same relocation-related challenges, in real-time, to you and your family. Enter, Zoe. Mia’s is the first in a series of four interviews - A Shared American Dream - that I’ll publish on Big Little Lives over the coming month. In each blog, I’ll explore a single, central, cutting question: Is life in the US all it’s shaped up to be? We’ll meet four incredible women who've helped shape my American Dream. Some friendships take you around the world. Ours has. Other friendships do this and more, branching off into the lands of your craziest, wildest, most surreal travel dreams. Ours has done this too. In honour of her fifth trip around the sun, I’d like to offer up this reflection on how our little girl is growing and adapting to life in the USA as well as to life in general. It’s peppered with a selection of responses she gave to some questions I asked her on the eve of her fifth birthday, last month. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did writing it. New post. 🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊 I don’t normally make New Year’s resolutions. But you know what? I’ve decided to set a couple of goals. Well, three to be exact. Call them resolutions, call them aims, call them ideas… but whatever you call them, don’t call them failures. Nope! I’ve got totally realistic and have set myself a few achievables for 2019. New post. Link in bio.
You KNOW I’m a holiday girl. I’ve shouted about it many, many times before. 12 months down the track, I’m thanking the good glitter-clad Christmas gods that I’m now so comfy here that I - and my family - can settle into the totally American, OTT Christmas spirit. Are you ready? We’re going all out. 12 months in to our all-American Adventure, here’s my Top 6 Things making me feel all festive and holiday-like! New post. Link in bio.
American TV ads are bad. Really bad. I’m not talking just plain boring or lacking in substance either. You want to know the reasons why I’m hating on them so much? Easy. Read on. And take a trip down Australian TV ad memory lane at the same time ;) New post. Link in bio.
