“You guys are really showing us Americans up”. It was this comment-in-passing from a colleague at work that really drove home for me the effects of the horrific shooting that unfolded in Christchurch, New Zealand on Friday 15 March, just two weeks ago. It’s been an experience that’s been completely harrowing for everyone it’s touched, that’s for sure, although it’s also brought about for me a huge sense of homesickness and gratitude for NZ’s response to such a disaster. This blog marks an end-point reflection on a series of interviews, A Shared American Dream, that I’ve published over the past month. By asking all these questions, by mulling over all of the beautiful answers, and by publishing this series of blogs, I do feel like I’ve got a big part of the way towards understanding more about what it is that connects us. You might remember that early on during my time in Palo Alto, I decided I needed more friends. Desperate for connection and a break from my life flying solo with our girls, I popped a post up on a local facebook page. I sat. I waited. And who should be the first to get in touch? A woman called Charlotte. Little did I know that she’d become one of my closest friends. This is Charlotte’s story. New post. Link in bio.

Kathryn’s is the third in a series of four interviews: A Shared American Dream. In each blog, I’ll explore a single, central, cutting question: Is life in the US all it’s shaped up to be? Kathryn is American, originally from the East Coast. She’s the mum of two young boys; one in elementary (primary) school, and one at pre-school with our Coco. What did I see at first glance? A friendly, thoughtful, intelligent woman. Well, she’s all that… and so much more. But what didn’t I see?
